Bakrid Mubarak

Bakrid Mubarak, or Eid al-Adha, is one of the most important celebrations in the calendar of Islam. This year, Bakrid is expected to be celebrated on Sunday, June 8 2025, by Muslims across the globe. This day marks the remembrance of Prophet Ibrahim’s (Abraham’s) deep devotion and faith in God’s commands, which involved ritualistic sacrifice of his son. The date observed serves as a public holiday for profound devotion and unwavering sacrifice in the spirit of Islam.

The core spirit of Bakrid exists in the faith of Prophet Ibrahim, who was asked by Allah to carry out the ultimate sacrifice by killing his cherished son Ismail (Ishaq) as a test of faith. During the sacrifice Ismail was saved, instead, Allah substituted a ram that Ibrahim could carry out a lesser sacrifice with. As such, the act made him a symbol and icon of faith abd devotion to God.

To honor the event, Muslims across the globe practice Qurbani or the ritualistic slaughter of animals like goats, sheep, and cows. The distributed meat, following the slaughter, serves the purpose to bring joy amongst one’s family, friends and the underprivileged. This act symbolizes giving which happens to reach every participating quarter in Eid especially the poor.

The observance of Eid al-Adha commences with a special communal worship, consolidated Salat al-Eid, which takes place in either a mosque or an open field. It is followed by a sermon (khutbah) focused on the values of sacrifice, compassion, and charity.

Post-Eid prayer, the Qurbani ritual is performed, which lasts up to three days. Following Islamic custom, the meat of the sacrificed animal is divided into three equal shares:

  • For the family – One-third,
  • For relatives and friends – One-third,
  • For the poor and needy – One-third.

This reinforces the sharing and social responsibility that lies at the heart of Islam.

Bakrid Mubarak is observed not only in Muslim-majority countries but also in multicultural countries with a sizable population of Muslims. Every region from Indonesia and Pakistan, to Nigeria, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Britain add their twist to the celebration of the festival.

In Saudi Arabia, Bakrid is celebrated together with the culmination of the yearly Hajj pilgrimage—one of Islam’s five essential pillars.
